There's some light distances on that page. Depending where the prince(p/s)s is in the solar system, there's probably gonna be some delay on the messages, but it looks like even at the worst it would be under five hours.

I feel like messages encoded in a book cipher embedded in, like, the interplanetary equivalent of Nigerian Prince email scamming would be appropriately absurd-yet-reasonably-secure.

The key should be some ridiculous Earth space opera that got unreasonably popular both on Earth and in the Empire while they were still on peaceful enough terms to do some trading.

Well, the key for a book cipher is usually a book (or at least a piece of text), but there could totally be a very thinly disguised expy of Miss Mars in it.

Or it was adapted into something she was involved in and that's why it became an interplanetary hit.

What if it's a trashy romance novel just so they had something with the word Consort in it. That got turned into a daytime tv movie

That would be hilarious.

They'd probably have to encode technical information about weapons and troop movements and so on by letter rather than by word in that case, but since that would make it a lot more frustrating for any intercepting parties to decode, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
