Incognito Ashigaru: You want nothing to do with your own identity. You are the estranged daughter of the Master Medium of the Sun Guard, but unlike your father, you find the dead incredibly disturbing, and would prefer as much distance between you and your gifts as possible.
EXCLUSIVE SKILL: Spirit Binding. You may act as a conduit. A recently dead or otherwise empty body can be re-inhabited by a spirit - whether its own or another - and any wounds be elementally sealed (but not healed) with fire. This is a temporary measure if the body is not healed further, but can last several minutes to a few hours.
INFORMATION: Like your father, you see the dead. And they want something of you - to live again. But the dead are terrifying, and neither duty nor destiny can make you serve the spirits - you've always preferred Dragons and elemental beings. Once you understood the extent of your power, and before your father did, you ran off. But you could not escape to the mainland - the Bando is walled off - and you would be recognized too easily in Nakumatou. Go to Nakamiyo, and they'd make you a Mibugumi - and force you face to face with death on the battlefield. Catch a pirate ship, and you'd face much the same problem. But in Koroshima, in the village of Suzuki, you could become a sniper, with no questions asked about your past - and that, at least, puts you amdist the elementals of the mountains, the dragons of peaks and sky, and keeps the dead a hundred paces distant.
All you want is quiet, but you can't have it. The Suzuki rifles may soon be deployed as marines, if Koroshima wins the Shogun's favor, and all your problems would come back. And the dragons of peaks and sky are agitated by something - some new presence. You're morbidly certain that staying here among them alone will prove just as bad.
So, what do you do now? Who can help you escape yourself? You will do anything they ask, if they can save you from the dead.
Does Spirit Binding only apply to spirits of the dead, or to the other spirits in the world like elementals, etc.?
Where do the dead tend to congregate? As she's trying to avoid the dead, what kinds of locations would Rosalie try to avoid in order to do so?
I'd really like to work in an analog to Rosalie's demon arm, in the sense of her left arm being where her magic and so on are expressed. My initial thinking is something like a sleeve of tattoos of magical, spiritual, and/or cultural significance. Or possibly a mixture. Could I connect something like that to her spirit binding abilities? Or use it to give her some elemental fire powers (as an interaction with the spirit bindings being sealed by flames)? I'm also interested in hearing any suggestions the mod team might have for how to work this into her infiltrator persona.
Also, given that the extra resources section link to Japanese names only... Is it okay if I use a more wuxia/Chinese-inspired name for Rosalie? Even as just as assumed name or something.
I used a Chinese name for Claudia's former tattooing master, and I'm sure the site I linked has plenty of Chinese names, too! In the name conversations I've seen, people were more going for Japanese-inspired names, so I went for what I had that would help.
I doubt she's ever tried more than one at a time. And conventional wisdom
says it shouldn't be possible. But dad conversed with many spirits at
once...
The original spirit could remain bound permanently. Another spirit would
not possess the same balance of elements, and so would either need regular
reinforcing, or the body would shut down within hours to a day or two.
A fire dragon spirit, for example, would cause fever and eventually
literally cook the body. A wood dragon body would stiffen, a water spirit
would drown its body, metal would cause mineral poisoning, wind would
cause oxygen toxicity (seizures, blindness, pulmonary failure ).
She's been acting strangely due to stress and her spiritual abilities (spooking at Hajime's haunting, abandoning patrol to follow Raidou into the woods). Melissa is confronting her over this strange behavior but the thread isn't far enough along to have a conclusion about the consequences yet. The Hajime and Raidou threads are also still in progress.
She also made contact with a dragon and one of the foreign spirits! That thread isn't quite concluded yet but it's far enough along that I can say that her overall attitude is of deep suspicion of the foreign spirit and worry that her careless questions may have caused the dragon to be harmed somehow. :(
Plan-wise, Matthew's player, some other Sun Guard players, and I have been hashing out ways for her relationship to Matthew to be revealed. I think the current plan is for Matthew to send spirits to spy on Suzuki, and for one of them to be one of the spirits to recognize her. This should happen during the next mingle. (I think Matt should be looped in on that Plurk as well!)
Nothing major to report. I think the biggest thing that happens is that Masshuu and Sora finally reunited. They agreed that Masshuu would try to get the dragons to tell him what they were trying to tell Sora and then meet up later. So the major thing I'm waiting on is what he has to report, because that's going to be the biggest factor in what Sora will do in the final week.
From what I've read so far, there seem to be two kinds of spirits in the world, those of the dead and those that are elemental. Are there any other kinds of spirits? Do elemental spirits always take the form of dragons?
And a Raidou-specific question, since Raidou's mun and I are planning for them to meet in the upcoming mingle. Rosalie would only be able to sense the spiritual presence of his demons but not actually see them, correct? Kind of related to the previous since my initial thought was that she would be able to see them, and I wanted to know how freaked out she should be by them, but then I saw in the Questions thread that summoners should only be able to sense their presence.
There are non-dragon elemental spirits, but they are usually small and
inconsequential, and therefore mostly overlooked. Water spirits of the
rice paddies near Mibugumi are an example - they're small stupid rabbitlike
things that see to the irrigation of rice. Other elemental spirits would
also be weak, mundane, and no more intelligent than animals.
technically, spirits of the dead are elemental as well - but as mortals,
they contain an even mixture of all five elements in balance, in small,
weak amounts, and cannot therefore do impressive feats of elementalism like
dragons or people using elemental magic (which is basically an
imbalance/abundance of one element in their natural makeup) can.
I believe what was worked out was that they can only be sensed while
contained in their tubes. If he has them out, they should be able to be
seen by summoners. If my answers on that have been misleading or
inconsistent, apologies.
As a further clarification, if Rosalie were to see one of Raidou's big non-humanoid spirits, how alarming would that be? I'm thinking something like Gdon, the big fire tiger spirit, who I believe is also considerably smarter than a rice rabbit.
Two! One just at the edge of the city, to the Dragon of the Mountain
Pines; and one further out and disused, called the Shrine of the Glovers,
to the Dragon of Singing Cave.
With the caveat that some of these threads are still in progress:
Important happenings: - Chiyo recognized Sora and they had a quiet talk - Sora very publicly recognized/was recognized by Ridou - Sora fell off a bench when one of Masshuu's spirit spies recognized her - Raidou's Questing Sense send him to Koroshima, where he met Sora again while in disguise as a woman. So far Sora hasn't recognized him. - Sora tried to find out why the dragons were angry and her prayer was hijacked AGAIN by a Trump, except this is the one who wants chaos, and she's trying to figure out what it wants. Most notably, the (non-trump) dragon referred to her as "Binder."
Effects going into the next week: - Sora has a sinking feeling that the SEKRIT POWER she's been ignoring is not going to be ignorable for much longer. - Regardless of whether or not Chiyo and Ridou agree to keep her secret, her assumption is that Masshuu is going to find out she's in Suzuki sooner or later due to the ghost who recognized her, so she is bracing for reunion.
Plans for next week: - Continuing previous threads - Masshuu's own dragon thread is sending him to Suzuki so the long-anticipated father-daughter reunion is scheduled to happen then - Planning to touch base with Mifeng ICly and OOCly since it seems like we didn't get a chance to thread this week
So, since Sora's finally going to use her SEKRIT BINDING POWER this mingle... Is there anything I should know or keep in mind about how it works and what it'll look like to watchers (both spiritually sensitive and otherwise)?
It takes a lot of energy, spiritually speaking, and sort of.. rekindles
extinguished elements. I hadn't given a lot of thought to visuals, but it
would make sense if it generated vapor - the person being revived giving
off mist or steam from sealing wounds, and from their mouth before they
start to breathe again?
But then I'm watching an anime where that happens, so that's probably
influencing my thoughts - call that optional, & go with whatever seems
coolest.
Question now that Rosalie has actually used her secret plot power: is Spirit Binding eligible for her to keep as a skill? If so, what would Spirit Binding look like post-Jaunt?

Clan strongholds belonging to multigenerational families, graveyards, old battlefields are all congregations of ghosts.

Further spirit binding questions as I ponder the possibilities:
- Is each binding something that Rosalie has to actively maintain? How many could she maintain at once?
- How long could a spirit binding last? Assuming the corpse is healed somehow.

Yes. It would still revive the dead, but binding spirits to empty bodies will only come up in a few jaunts. Like Harrogate or Dolorosa.
