As Thorne shared with the network, Travelers who vanish find themselves alone in a small room. But it doesn’t look quite as described last time. Paper lanterns hang in the corners, and a lemniscate of live, spicily scented blue roses traces a figure eight on the floor. A little marble plinth sits beside the looping roses, with a champagne flute balanced on it, pink, fizzy liquid quietly effervescing within. In place of the throne that was there before, each half of the loop holds a brown leather sphere - a yoga meditation-ball chair. They’re a little tricky to balance on.


The walls, floors, and ceiling are tiled, a prismatic fade from one color to another, each tile unique, just slightly different in hue than those around it, each colored line giving a sense that it belongs to a bigger pattern, but never revealing enough to allow anyone certainty about what that pattern might be. It is only a glimpse of a larger world… in this small, quiet space.

"I had very little choice in either matter," the man says. "Alone of my kindred, there are... restrictions... on the forms I can take. And my mind, if you want to call it that, is... alien... to yours."

[oraquarius]

It's an annoying answer, but Jotaro believes the guy's being truthful and so he won't hold the brain-shaking or annoying twenty questions garbage against him. He doesn't really have the energy for grudges at the moment, and the fact that this guy looks to be as worn out as Jotaro himself has felt since Cairo is working in his favor. Being straightforward is just... Easier. Most of the time, anyway.

"What about your name? That alien too?" He's gonna assume his host already knows his and so he'll be skipping the pleasantries unless it proves necessary.

[sagetime]

"SAGE. At present, I am called SAGE."

[oraquarius]

"SAGE," Jotaro repeats, looking the guy over more thoroughly, assessing, considering. "All right." There's a pause while he gathers his thoughts, and then he circles back to his first question, now that there's the chance he might get something more to work with: "What's the point of this? Us being here right now, in this room."

SAGE had said that it wasn't really his choice to appear in the form he had initially, and that someone else is responsible for bringing the Travelers in, so Jotaro figures that it's possible the whole intimate chat bullshit, setting and all, may not have been entirely up to him either.

[sagetime]

"As we set Phase Three into configuration, it benefits us all to make a concentrated attempt at... alignment. I have selected you as one of my representatives."

[oraquarius]

Jotaro hums, moving, finally, to take a seat on one of the leather balls. He might be here a while, so why not?

"Why me?" He's not just being a pain in the ass- he really wants to know. He's assuming there are stakes here, and so picking a person who has next to no idea what all of this entails seems misguided at best and completely moronic at worst. Unless of course SAGE doesn't care. But he'll get into that later.

[sagetime]

"As the second Phase closes, we communicated with one another for those who most closely aligned with our archetypes. When there was a conflict, we employed methods simulating randomness to decide which of several of us would receive a Traveler."

[oraquarius]

"And you got stuck with me," he concludes. "All right."

Random, huh? That's fine by him. Fewer expectations he didn't ask for.

[sagetime]

"I was not displeased to discover you among my selection," he responds after a moment, eyebrows lifting.

[oraquarius]

"Huh." There are things he's good at, and things he's not, but at this point trying to determine which of his qualities SAGE approves of isn't all that important if it was more or less random selection, and so he nods but doesn't pursue the matter any further. That's good enough. Moving on:

"So I'm one of your 'representatives', then. What does that mean? Representatives for what, exactly?" A pause. "And don't say 'Phase Three' unless you're gonna tell me what that is."

[sagetime]

"In the power struggle my kind engage in, w employ proxies and catspaws," SAGE explains. "All to this point has been mere preparation. Now, we begin to face one another down - through you."

[oraquarius]

Jotaro scowls. That sounds like a personal problem...

"I'm not hurting any of the others for no reason," he says, defensively. ...And naively, though as a newbie he doesn't know it yet.

[sagetime]

"Nor is that what I ask of you - although it may well be asked, and more than once," he says, sighing sadly.

[oraquarius]

"By who? What does that even mean?"

[sagetime]

"You would best know them as MALBOLGE, and the Gatekeeper," he says. "Both seek action on terms... unfavorable to anyone's peace of mind. And many others... may prove indifferent, at best."

[oraquarius]

"But not you," he says, and to his credit he doesn't actually sound all that skeptical. He has more reason to believe this guy doesn't mean him real harm than to believe he does, but all things considered he's getting the feeling that that won't amount to much outside this room.

"So they're dead serious about it, this 'power struggle'. What's in it for the winner?" He's guessing 'more power', but that doesn't mean shit to him and so for clarity he adds, "...Specifically."

[sagetime]

"So serious that I was not even permitted to forfeit," he says, with a wry air of remove. "And using speech to approximate an answer for you, I believe the word would be... 'everything.'"

[oraquarius]

Jotaro fights the urge to roll his eyes; he only succeeds because, well... He kind of knows how that is. Everything.

"'Everything' doesn't appeal to you, then?"

[sagetime]

"Not in the slightest," he says. "I find it... busy. Crowded. Rococo."

[oraquarius]

"...Good grief. 'Everything' must mean something different to you than it does to me," he observes. "But whatever-- so you'd rather just do your own thing and those two- Malbolge, was it? And the 'Gatekeeper'? They weren't having it. Wouldn't it mean less competition for them if you dropped out of the race? Why not just get rid of you instead of forcing you back in?"

Part of him gets wanting a 'clean' win, but... This feels a little extreme, frankly.

[sagetime]

"The Gatekeeper remained neutral. MALBOLGE... hmm. I believe there is a rule of the game which prevents me from explaining zir objection to my departure. Suffice to say it was confident of defeating me in a head to head match."

[oraquarius]

"Why worry about the rules if you're not worried about winning?" Or, you know, if the rules don't suit him. Authority problems thy name is Kujo Jotaro.

[sagetime]

"Because there are others I have no wish to empower."

[oraquarius]

"...Fair enough."

[sagetime]

"I think I have time and focus left for one more query, if you wish to submit one."
