If you are not a plot infiltrator or someone with IC reasons to share knowledge available to plot infiltrators, please do not read the comments of this post.

If you ARE a plot infiltrator, please comment under your toplevel to let us know you've read it; please also pop over here to announce your plotroleishness to the game at large. We prefer that you do any confidential plotting with other plot-important folks in the comments here, rather than on plurk, and please comment no later than August 5th, 15th, 25th & September 4th with a brief (as brief as 1 sentence; as long as you like) summary of your activity during the week & plans for next week. These comments will help the mods shape mingles and plot events to keep the story dynamic and player actions important to the outcome. Likewise, comment at any time with any questions you may have, and a mod will get back to you within 36 hours at the outside.

What exactly happened early in the exorcist's career that made him retreat to be a monk?

We didn't have a detailed incident in mind, but the rough is: exorcism abilities being less effective against the eldritch than the demonic, an ambitious failed exorcism left him traumatized and doubting his capabilities.

If he got some people to physically help him into the theater in the hole, he would bless, exorcise, throw holy water, and yell prayers at evil spirits. He may be convinced to perform anti-eldritch rituals using his eldritch books or other materials. Since he doesn't believe in "that rubbish", he only do it to make someone feel better. How fucked would he be? If he was killed, would he return as ghost!monk or ghost!Altair?

Some heavy shit would go down and he would be in high mental and physical danger, but whether he would die or not would depend on what PC ghosts did in response.

He could return as either, at your option.

Matthew told him that, "from James's collection of family stories, that the spirit known as Bernkastel was in life a sorceress and a cultist, and that she sought the Necronomicon. A book of rituals for controlling the dead. Even if Bernkastel's not responsible, I'll wager there's a good chance that that book's involved somewhere. As for why we should concentrate on her...she's connected to an object for manipulating the dead, she's connected to other more visibly malevolent spirits like Zebadiah Black."

If Father Brown phoned the Church with this information and looked through St. Bruno's records, would he find anything?

The Church could let him know that as far as they know the text known as Al Azif or the Necronomoeikon does not have any extant copies in the British Isles; they track as many versions of the text as they can.

However, a seeker of that book is likely to have learned many ways to control and manipulate the dead.
