Oh god.

Oh god.

"You - you didn't send people to Moebius because it's part of your bloody game, you did it because you wanted to...fuck...you wanted to bloody dole out punishment..."

It's a good thing she plopped him into that chair, because if she hadn't he'd be needing to sit down right about now. They covers their mouth with one hand, as if trying to hold back the horror. The Arcana made Travellers die, over and over again, just an endless parade of death...because they wanted to punish them. And not just the Arcana as a whole, but one that had decided to mark him.

"No, no," she says. "It was part of the game. But if you hadn't done what you did, we'd have probably sent you somewhere less... difficult, maybe? Yeah, less difficult. And honestly, if you hadn't all banded together-- I mean, it was a full Jaunt punishment because you'd all earned it. We wouldn't do that if it was only a large portion of you that had."

His head snaps up, and there's fury in their eyes, along with the horror and the dread.

"Earned it?," he growls. "Death after death, just an endless cycle of pain - that's not punishment. That's torture. And you - bloody hell, you think they earned it? You think anyone deserves that? Tell me, what fucking crime is there that justifies executing someone not just once, but over and over and over again?!"

Her eyes narrow. "Oh, come of it, they weren't even real deaths. We kept your bodies safe, just like we always do. We didn't expect it to be that bad for you until we saw how you were reacting and then the Jaunt was started and we don't abandon Jaunts before their conclusions unless we can possibly avoid it. It's never good when we do. Never. We're not going to do another Moebius, all right? Not if we can help it."

"You - you god damn bastards, you think that matters? You think you can just say, 'oh, those bodies weren't real', and pretend that you haven't made someone die - that you made them live through that, experience that, feel that? You disgust us. You play god with our lives, you see fit to make us suffer and to use us for your game where you all seek to give yourselves even more power. And don't think I haven't fucking noticed that you haven't even bothered to answer my question there, by the way. I guess knowing what merits punishment is another thing we aren't allowed to know, is it? Because I don't believe that you won't think up some other hell for us to go through if you decide that we earned it."

SORRY META BUT SHE HAS TO COVER FOR HER BFF MALBOLGE

"You know," she snaps, "I don't have to do this for you. I don't have to give you popcorn and beverages, I don't have to provide a chair for you, I don't have to give you explanations. You're a mortal. You aren't even a very interesting one. And for your information, we don't 'think up' the Jaunt scenarios. These aren't our worlds. We find situations with potential outcomes that fit our archetypes, which Moebius was one of. If you have to blame anyone, blame Morty. He was the one who decided it had to be cyclical. There were plenty of futile, painful scenarios that didn't involve repeating cycles. Oh, but you won't, will you? You'll blame us all because we're absolutely identical, with the same concepts and archetypes and thoughts, no need at all to go through a war of ideas."

"Yes, because giving me popcorn while you're kicking me in the face just make it all better," he says, his words dripping with sarcasm. "But sorry, but I'm not going to buy that your buddy Devil was all nice and innocent and blameless in this scenario. He's the one who decided that the Travellers needed pain."

Not that he wouldn't have more than a few questions for Death as well. But since Death wasn't the one standing in from of them right now, those would have to come later.

"But do you know why we blame all of you? It's not because you're all identical. You're not, because some of you definitely manage to reach heights of suck far beyond and above the others. It's because every single one of you is playing this game in the first place. Every one of you is using us as your soldiers in your war of ideas. And you know, I'd be very, very surprised if there's even any real need for this war in the first place beyond the fact that you just want to have it."

"How else can we get them back?" she screams at him. "Do you know why we started this round? It's because one of our own was murdered, the kind you can't come back from, and the only way to get them back is to play Synodiporia to the end. We need the World. We need it to make ourselves whole again. But what do you care? You're probably glad we've lost them, we've lost all of them, you're probably proud of what you all did to Hoshiko. Get out of my Conversation Space. Now."

And Matthew will find himself dumped unceremoniously back into liminal space, waist deep in oobleck.
