SKILL EQUIVALENCES.

SKILL EQUIVALENCES

If your character came into the game with previous skills from canon or another game, they may have equivalents among the in-game skills. If you'd like to use those skills as if they had the same mechanisms as game-granted skills, you may list the game skills applicable, along with a brief explanation of why or how your character has that particular skill - for example, characters with police or private investigator training could claim the Crime Scene Investigation skill, based on their previous training. If the skill was acquired in a previous game rather than canon, we may ask for a thread proof of the character gaining that skill.

Skill equivalences can be taught to other Travelers, and only apply to Jaunt skills - Liminal and Psychic equivalences are assigned at app time, as we cap those powers in-game. It is only necessary to claim a skill equivalence if your character has an interest in using or teaching it according to in-game mechanics, or if it satisfies a prerequisite for another skill. For more on skill equivalences, see here.

The skills Travelers have already learned are listed here for now; we're working on a better layout for them.

Character Name: Naoto Shirogane
Series: Persona 4
Skill Equivalencies Requested: Crime Scene Investigation - Eidetic Memory
Reasoning:

Crime Scene Investigation: Naoto is a highly-trained detective, with the knowledge and ability to investigate any circumstance. In canon, she, in the presence of two police detectives investigates the scene of a car accident of a suspected kidnapper and murderer.

Eidetic Memory: Naoto has a vast knowledge of the things she has seen and read. Many times she will quote people's words back to them weeks or months later, word for word from memory. She also can remember settings, situations, and people from even a slight interaction.

Character Name: Near (Nate River)
Series: Death Note
Skill Equivalencies Requested: Crime Scene Investigation, Cold-Reading, Eidetic Memory
Reasoning:

Crime Scene Investigation: Near has been in detective training from a very young age. While he does not go outside often, there is no doubt he would have been taught to analyze crime scene photos, videos, and reports. As one of the front-runners to succeed the world's greatest detective, there is no way he doesn't have a great deal of skill in this area.

Cold Reading: Again, tying in with his detective training. Near knows how to pick up small cues in body language, tone of voice, and phrasing. He instantly picked up on Light's discomfort with him, and came to suspect him quite early. He has repeatedly used his knowledge of behaviour to manipulate people to his advantage. He even deconstructed the motivations of an angry mob suddenly attacking his headquarters.

Eidetic Memory: This was mentioned in the skills section of his application and I have been playing him with that in mind. But for canon evidence, perhaps the best indication of it is how he handles the blank white jigsaw puzzle he's seen assembling at his introduction. The first assembling takes many days, but then he dumps the puzzle out and completes it again in a matter of minutes -- and this is a big puzzle with small pieces. Eidetic memory is one of the only ways this is possible. He was also able to remember a face he'd seen on television, what he'd said, and the date and time it was broadcast weeks after the fact. (Notably, he'd been watching multiple broadcasts at the same time; he was still able to single out a specific one.)

Character Name: Charlene "Thorne" Durante
Series: Classic World of Darkness OC
Skill Equivalencies Requested: Genre Savvy, Mythobiology
Reasoning:

Genre Savvy -- Thorne was an English major and spent four-and-a-half years studying how literature works. She also had (unfulfilled) dreams of being a writer herself. Basically, she knows how stories work.

Mythobiology -- On her character sheet, Thorne has three dots in Knowledge: Occult, the description of which follows: You are knowledgeable in occult areas such as mysticism, curses, magic, folklore, and particularly vampire lore. Unlike most other Knowledges, Occult does not imply a command of hard facts. Much of what you know may well be rumor, myth, speculation, or hearsay. However, the secrets to be learned in this field are worth centuries of sifting legend from fact. High levels of Occult imply a deep understanding of vampire lore, as well as a good grounding in other aspects of the occult. At the very least, you can discern what is patently false.

Character Name: Phillip Santorini
Series: Persona 3
Skill Equivalencies Requested: Theatrical Skills
Reasoning:

Theatrical Skills: Phillip's been involved in acting since he was eight and has done a lot in theater acting and knows a lot about how things work behind the scenes.

Character Name: Melissa Lyre
Series: Original Fanon Character
Skill Equivalencies Requested: Crime Scene Investigation
Reasoning:

Crime Scene Investigation: Melissa is a police officer, and on her character sheet she has the Crime Scene specialization on her Investigation skill. It's a little too perfect.

(I am assume the skills along the lines of 'Fireaems use' and '21st century technology' don't need to go on this list? If they do then I have some updates to make. XD)

Reasoning:

Care of police force training + day-to-day work leading a counter-terrorism squad:
Basic Crime Scene Investigation

Cold Reading

Care of coming from a cyberpunk future:

Character Name: Levi
Series: Attack on Titan
Skill Equivalencies Requested: Perfect Timing, Aerial Acrobatics
Reasoning:
Levi's known in his canon as 'humanity's strongest soldier' and is supposedly as powerful as an entire squad of men. Depending on the version of canon he's taken out half a dozen titans by himself on a flat plane which requires both of the above skills- the timing to make the strikes in the rain and the acrobatics to maneuver between all the grabby hands with the gear.

Character Name: Claudia Donovan
Series: Warehouse 13
Skill Equivalencies Requested: Jury-Rigging/Kit-Bashing
Reasoning:

Claudia does both of these several times over the course of the show. Up to her canon point alone, she has:

*rigged a pair of handcuffs to carry a 20,000-volt charge at the push of a button (she has them in her debut scene)
*come up with a plausible tech-only recreation of her brother's teleportation experiment, from parts available in his old lab
*built a functional hologram projector from scavenged parts in the Warehouse
*built a functional laser microphone from scavenged parts in the Warehouse - and unlike the holoprojector, that was most likely done inside of an hour
*helped repair two busted Artifacts (a film camera and Helena's time machine) that needed to be restored to functionality, however briefly, within minutes
*designed a pair of gloves to discharge accumulated energy from an Artifact, again on pretty short notice

If anything, she's a step or two beyond kit-bashing as described, but this is definitely a thing in her wheelhouse.

He is a very talented in engineering and electronics, able to build his own droids and weapons, and repair starships from burnt out husks of nothing. Character Name: Pearl
Series: Steven Universe
Skill Equivalencies Requested: Astronavigation & Piloting, Eidetic Memory/Perfect Recall, Interface, Kit-Bashing, Swordfighting
Reasoning: Oh boy. I'm so sorry.

Kit-Bashing: She built this thing out of plane parts and pieces of junk in an old barn, an EMP out of... a mini fridge and hair dryers???, this freaking robot out of more random parts she found in the barn... She's an extremely talented engineer who is used to working with whatever the hell comes to hand.
Astronavigation & Piloting: Re: the above spaceship, Pearl was perfectly confident she could pilot the thing to the next star system, which presumably requires a decent ability to navigate in space over massive distances, as well as the skill to get a ship to Alpha Centauri and back in 50 years. (For the record, that requires somehow achieving speeds of almost 117 million miles an hour.)

Eidetic Memory/Perfect Recall: Idk, there were two skills that seem to be roughly the same thing, one from Lightning Age and one from Solstice Masquerade. The point is, Pearl can record memories and replay them perfectly - every word, every inflection exactly the same - thousands of years later. She doesn't. Forget. Anything.

Interface: She's interfaced directly with gem technology on multiple occasions - this may be partially a function of gem technology itself, but she's one of two gems who seem to be able to do this, so it seems likely it's also an inborn or learned skill, not something any gem could just do. She's used these interfaces to input commands to control a gem warship, and to download and quickly sort through data.

Swordfighting: It... it's kind of her thing. She's been doing this since before human civilization began, okay?

Added Eidetic Memory, Kit-Bashing, and Swordfighting. I've asked Matt, if he tells me Eidetic Memory and Perfect Recall are different, we'll figure it out then, but way more people have eideitc memory, so that seems to be the one that makes more sense for now.

As for interface, from what you're saying, the interface only works on gem technology, is that correct? If so, I don't think it would count as equivalent.

Pain Tolerance: Cassandra has been shown to take significant damage in battle, up to and including lost limbs, with seemingly no reaction. She also manages to move, and fight, with no difficulty despite the large unhealed incision running down the front of her body.

Wilderness Survival: Cassandra's hunts tended to take place away from civilization, and Claymores are always shown traveling on foot. They will not infrequently end up camping in the woods, and at least one has been shown returning from hunting game, albeit for her (human) companion.

Reasoning: With the exception that Elliot can't recall these memories at will, this is basically identical to Humpty Dumpty's memory repression power. Aside from being triggered by other traumatic memories, the only way he could access them is if Humpty Dumpty unsealed them. (If he were to ever gain control of the Chain, this difference would be a moot point.)

Normally, because it's tied to his Chain, this version of the skill wouldn't be teachable. However, Humpty Dumpty can form multiple contracts, so ??? I'm sorry this is needlessly complicated.

He's just so old, canonically over two-thousand. Apologies for the length.

Character Name: Feliciano Vargas / North Italy
Series: Hetalia
Skill Equivalencies Requested:
Agriculture, Astronomy, Automobile Operation, Barista, Combat Skills, Court Etiquette, Cultures and Humanities, Formal Dance, Riding, Sword-fighting, Wilderness Survival, 21st-century (or really, any century) Technology Use

Reasoning:
Agriculture: He has his own garden and has lived through many parts of history where he's had to grow his own food. His nation has always been heavily agricultural, although in the modern day, that's left more to the south- although it's not as if he's forgotten the skills.

Astronomy: He's a two-thousand year old being who's witnessed astronomy evolve and advance over centuries, and being Italy, he's witnessed and been civilizations that often relied heavily on the stars for augury. He's always leaned towards the Pagan religions like his Grandpa Rome, which drives Vatican nuts.

Automobile operation: He knows how to drive and he drives fast. Amusingly, fast enough to give poor, mild-mannered Japan a panic. Boy likes his Ferraris.

Barista: This man goes nuts about coffee. Italians. There was a joke about Italy even sending a special espresso machine out with one of their astronauts to ensure that she would have proper coffee while in space.

Combat skills: He's been shown in canon to know how to fight, surprisingly well, and has to do so often during war. (The running joke in the series being that he'd simply rather run away than actually fight, so he is often underestimated.)

Court etiquette: This ties back to constant politicking as the representative of an entire nation. He lived centuries through court intrigue, scandal, and scheming, and he knows how to work his way around nobles and politicians and royals alike.

Cultures and humanities: His canonical entity is literally that of an entire nation, and having had two thousand years to get to know other nations and their cultures, he's pretty well-versed in the subject. Same goes for world history.

Formal dance: In his canon he's been shown to dance all the time, in all manners- he's generally a very friendly and energetic fellow. His historical significance no doubt also made it so that he was very carefully instructed in proper dancing skills, to impress and entertain the nobles.

Riding: Follows the skills he learned growing up, both for war and for leisure.

Sword-fighting: He's been shown in his canon to be adept at combat when pushed to it, with both swords and other weapons (most notably, archery) as he lived through a time and fought in wars when swords were still in fashion.

Wilderness survival: He's over two-thousand years old if canon is to be trusted (canon can be... surprisingly vague and also unwieldy), and he's lived the majority of his life during periods where he often had to fend for himself due to either lack of organized settlements, or due to constant travelling between settlements. Also became applicable during wartime, in some situations.

21st-Century (or any century) Technology Use: Mundane, pretty straightforward. He's lived through it all.

There's a bunch below. Because Nations.

When you consider Ancient Rome and Greece your embarrassing, overbearing guardian figures, you qualify for old as balls, and for knowing lots of stuff. You also get PTSD and immortal ennui and you sometimes feel your people die, so it evens out kind of?

Character Name: Monaco
Series: Hetalia
Skill Equivalencies Requested: 1920s automobile operation, high society etiquette, gambling and games of chance, gambling (cheating), alcohol tolerance, doubletalk and innuendo, 1920s dancing, swordsmanship, high society finance, contortionism, formal dance, wound regeneration, Victorian manners, acting & theatric skills, astronomy, prevarication, nautical skills, combat skills, court etiquette, cultures & humanity, research, 21st century technology use.
Reasoning:

Oh boy.

Monaco first came into any real prominence as a vital port overlooking the Mediterranean in a strategic way for different rulers to take advantage of, has fought on ships in the past and deals with rich people's yachts now. Nautical skills are as natural for her as wound regeneration for Nations in general.

Also embedded in her instincts from centuries of battle and blending in with humans are prevarication, acting, all forms of combat mentioned above, and doubletalk.

As for the more dignified things, Genevieve has had to mingle with her nobles at whatever snazzy soirées they may throw or attend, and she has done this for centuries, which is why court etiquette, Victorian manners, high society etiquette and finance, and formal dance are second nature to her.

Most of her time nowadays, at home at least, is devoted to the arts and betterment of culture (hence research, modern technology, cultures and humanities, because she thinks college courses are a decent hobby sometimes)... and a good gamble. Genevieve knows gambling and games of chance well, and has an intense lucky streak due to her casinos and practice. She really only knows how to cheat to better identify and catch cheaters. Monaco in canon is noted to be skilled in ballet, and that extreme flexibility leads to contortionism as an unexpected skill. She's a little old lady but she keeps herself limber. Monaco has adored cars and racing from the start, so while she's more than a bit forgetful when it comes to America's pop culture at the time, she remembers the 1920s and their automobiles and music with excitement.

She was also one of the few who didn't get "miniskirt-short tunic singalong" drunk at Halloween, so alcohol tolerance has to come into play, right?

Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
Skill Equivalencies Requested: Unarmed Combat Style (Shaolin kung fu), Eidetic Memory, Superhuman Computation
Reasoning:

Unarmed Combat Style: Ever since Ed was very, very young he has practiced martial arts with his teacher and his younger brother Alphonse. He uses these abilities all the time in a battle and makes sure to keep his skill honed.

Eidetic Memory: Ed is considered somewhat of a genius who's able to recall things he's learned a very long time ago with perfect accuracy. He has no problem in remembering the smallest of details of something important that needs to be known.

Superhuman Computation: See above for most. He's a genius in alchemy, as he's been studying since he was young; he's very good at solving even most difficult formulas and puzzles, as shown when he solved how to do the human transmutation circle when he was just a young kid; he's also the youngest state alchemist that ever was.

Reasoning: She's a prodigy worth a 100 ordinary soldiers at everything, including using the 3D gear from their world for doing acrobatics in the air and dodging / attacking titans or even humans or anything else. That along with everything else places her as number one from their class and she's copying new tricks to it from Levi like it's no big deal. And then she's also an Ackerman; who in canon have the ability to "know exactly" what to do in situations, especially when their life is threatened. Character Name: Feliciano Vargas / North Italy
Series: Hetalia
Skill Equivalencies Requested:
Diplomacy, Etiquette, Roman Sports, Sailing, Alcohol Tolerance, Gambling, Event Planning, Roman Cultural Knowledge, Roman Religious & Superstitious Ritual. Basically everything from Naples except gladiatorial combat, because Feliciano was not a fighter back then. He only knows the culture about it, not the combat. He grew up raised by the Roman Empire during the later half of the Empire's reign.

Reasoning:
Diplomacy: He's a Nation! Diplomacy is part of his day-to-day life and job.

Etiquette: Feliciano has lived through millenias' worth of different etiquette. He's familiar with tons of different codes of it.

Roman Sports,
Roman Cultural Knowledge,
and Roman Religious & Superstitious Ritual:

Alive during the Roman Empire! Experienced all three firsthand, learning directly from the Roman Empire himself.

Sailing: He's got one of the most powerful navies around and he spent centuries being a world power with that influence- he definitely knows how to sail smaller boats, too.

Alcohol Tolerance: He handles his alcohol about as well as Germany, so that's pretty impressive!

Gambling: Oh, he's definitely got a knack for gambling, it's been huge in Italy since Roman times. (He doesn't compare at all to Monaco, though, he'll lose to her like every time.)

Reasoning: So when I turned in his app, I kind of handwaved Lupa's extra senses as an Asura and what exactly they were, however, since then canonmates have been given the skill-cap/equivalency of Psychic Detection for what would be the same skills (the main characters are all Asura like Lupa and can do things like sense presences and limited emotions even at a distance and through doors etc. Since Lupa is a minor character we don't have direct confirmation, but it's reasonable to assume) and upon realizing this I had an 'oops' moment because he probably should have been limited/changed all along.
