SKILL EQUIVALENCES.

SKILL EQUIVALENCES

If your character came into the game with previous skills from canon or another game, they may have equivalents among the in-game skills. If you'd like to use those skills as if they had the same mechanisms as game-granted skills, you may list the game skills applicable, along with a brief explanation of why or how your character has that particular skill - for example, characters with police or private investigator training could claim the Crime Scene Investigation skill, based on their previous training. If the skill was acquired in a previous game rather than canon, we may ask for a thread proof of the character gaining that skill.

Skill equivalences can be taught to other Travelers, and only apply to Jaunt skills - Liminal and Psychic equivalences are assigned at app time, as we cap those powers in-game. It is only necessary to claim a skill equivalence if your character has an interest in using or teaching it according to in-game mechanics, or if it satisfies a prerequisite for another skill. For more on skill equivalences, see here.

The skills Travelers have already learned are listed here for now; we're working on a better layout for them.

Character Name: Alcuin no Delaunay
Series: Kushiel's Legacy
Skill Equivalencies Requested: Blind Maneuvering
Reasoning: Since he was a young child Alcuin was raised to be a consummate spy. In Kushiel's Chosen it is mentioned by Phedre that they were trained in a maze with blindfolds over their eyes. The quote, as found on page 387 of my hardcover copy is as follows: "When we were children, Delaunay would set up courses for Alcuin and me, mazes that we must negotiate blindfolded, until we could move silently and swiftly in the dark."

Character Name: Zaknafein Do'Urden
Series: Forgotten Realms : The Legend of Drizzt
Skill Equivalencies Requested: Sensory/Somatic Conditioning
Reasoning: In book canon there are a lot of instances where people talk about how he's able to accomplish things most people are not capable of doing, which is why he was viewed for centuries as being the greatest warrior in Menzoberranzan (and is still thought of the same way decades after his death). A lot of it falls in line with the conditioning skills, (always seeming know what he is and is not physically capable of, pulling off amazing physical feats, his his hearing being almost unnaturally keen) most notedly his ability to function completely blind. The closest actual D&D ability still requires him to be able to hear, but he had been able to whip the tongue out of a high priestesses mouth while purposefully blinded as screaming and the chaos of a house war was going on around him. It could be argued that he was able to sense her in a different way, because a pinpoint attack like that to prevent her from casting spells is a difficult thing to accomplish even being able to see.

Not sure if this completely translates, but it can't hurt to ask.

Hmm, I can see how the conditioning skills are similar. Moving in the dark would fall under Blind Maneuvering, though, not conditioning.

Character Name: Feliciano Vargas
Series: Hetalia
Skill Equivalencies Requested: Blind Maneuvering, Morse Code
Reasoning:
Blind Maneuvering: Amusingly enough, it's addressed in his canon that Feliciano has his eyes shut about 95% of the time and yet manages to navigate and complete all manner of tasks without any difficulty. His movements are even natural despite wandering around with his eyes shut. (Whenever asked about this, though, he dodges the question, a running gag in the series.)

Morse Code: He lived through its development, and it was used heavily during the World Wars. Being what he is, it was crucial to know morse code during the era.

Character Name: Beatrice the Golden
Series: Umineko: When They Cry
Skill Equivalencies Requested: Genre Savvy
Reasoning: Beatrice is a student of stories, a creator of stories, and may or may not be a self-aware fictional character (it really depends on who, in-story, you ask). She's intimately familiar with the mystery and supernatural-horror genres specifically, and already views her existence through a lens of storytelling rules and conventions, to the point where in canon she's gotten into actual fights with the personification of Knox's Ten Commandments for writing mystery.

Series: nWoD Fanon OC
Skill Equivalencies Requested: Sensory Eavesdropping, Hammerspace I, Automobile Operation (21st century), Technology Use (21st century)
Reasoning: (If apping a veteran or receiving a power cap, just state "Veteran" or "Power Cap")
Sensory Eavesdropping: Power Cap for extrasensory aspects of Boneyard manifestation.
Hammerspace I: Power Cap for item storage aspect of Caul manifestation.
Automobile Operation: In nWoD mechanics terms, Amanda possesses three dots in the Drive skill with a skill specialty in Motorcycles, as well as the Stunt Driver (World of Darkness Rulebook, permits the character to drive a vehicle and perform an unrelated action in the same turn without penalty) and Wheelman (Midnight Roads supplement, applies the 9-again rule to all uses of the Drive skill) merits. In practical terms, she's a pro at handling a vehicle under difficult or stressful circumstances, and even better if that vehicle is a motorcycle.
Technology Use: In nWoD mechanics terms, Amanda has four dots in the Craft skill, with skill specialties in Automobiles and Electronics. She also has the Industrial Key, and as her geist's keystone memento has the Industrial Key as well, she recieves substantial bonuses when invoking it. In practical terms, she has extensive expertise in building and repairing engines and consumer electronics, as well as a deep connection to technology as it relates to ghosts and the dead.

Doing this now before I forget again:

Character Name: Raidou Kuzunoha XIV
Series: SMT: Devil Summoner
Skill Equivalencies Requested: Crime Scene Investigation, Cold Reading
Reasoning:
Crime Scene Investigation: Raidou has had to do this multiple times in canon in his capacity as a private detective, most notably in the second game when he was investigating a spate of murders.

Cold Reading: Raidou needs to be able to size people up quickly in order to have some idea of how to get information out of them in the course of a case. He has also needed to impersonate specific people in canon, and most of the time, that means he needs to pick up as much about them as possible as quickly as possible (because he's frequently on a deadline) and to be able to compensate for any discrepancies in behavior that their associates might notice. Most importantly for a devil summoner, he needs to be able to assess the nature and mood of any demon he happens to be negotiating with so he can respond accordingly, especially if the object is getting the demon to form a pact with him.

Character Name: Alcuin no Delaunay
Series: Kushiel's Legacy
Skill Equivalencies Requested: Cold Reading, Court Etiquette, Cultures and Humanities, Doubletalk/Innuendo, Edged Weapons (Daggers), Eiditic Memory, Formal Dance, High Society Etiquette, Perfect Recall, Prevarication, Research, Riding, Slight of Hand, Theatrical Skills
Reasoning:
Cold Reading: Phedre often states that Alcuin could more easily tell what was in a person's heart than she could, and how to warm up to them swiftly.

Court Etiquette: He was in and around a royal court and upper echelons of society since he was six, to the point where he was an unremarkable scribe for the first royal ambassadorial visit from another country.

Cultures and Humanities: His studies pointedly included much of Europe and their cultures, laws, religions, languages, histories, mythology.

Doubletalk/Innuendo: He repeatedly shows that he can imply and hint through body language and expression and the occasional line of dialogue that he is interested in someone or flattered by them, attracting them to him in return and implying he might wish them as a patron. (Also: he's a courtesan. That is totally part of his training.)

Edged Weapons (Daggers): He has received a wide variety of training in handling and using daggers as weapons in a range of styles. While none of them are complete regimens, I believe they would stack to a proficiency.

Eidetic Memory: Alcuin repeatedly is known for repeating back a conversation perfectly, word for word, including tone and pitch and emphasis.

Formal Dance: All mid-to-high class D'Angelines in the City attend Longest Night balls, which include a large number of dances, and Alcuin would have been trained to perform exquisitely in this arena, as that is where he would have attracted many of his patrons.

High Society Etiquette: He was of the lower upper class or upper middle class, but routinely participated in functions in the upper levels of society including the royal court. ...He would know how to comport himself.

Perfect Recall: In his lessons as a child and in practice as a spy, Alcuin repeatedly recalls large chunks of information word for word.

Prevarication: He had to often deal with people - particularly one suitor and his master - who wished things of him he did not wish to reveal or to give, and dancing around the subject or outright lying was something he was so good at that the master spy of the household could not tell otherwise.

Research: His master set him a task of great importance looking for and compiling information on a subject.

Riding: There is a protracted section of the book in which Alcuin learns to ride and adores it. He is given a magnificent horse as his "graduation" present from being a Servant.

Slight of Hand: While Alcuin is not shown to demonstrate this skill, his foster sister Phedre is throughout the series, and they received the same education. It is logical that he would have learned it too.

Theatrical Skills: ...If playing a role so well that no one knows it isn't how you feel for most of your life doesn't constitute decent acting skills, I don't know what does.

Character Name: Drizzt Do'Urden
Series: Forgotten Realms: The Legend of Drizzt
Skill Equivalencies Requested: Combat Skills, Nautical Skills, and Survivalism
Reasoning:
Combat Skills - Drizzt has been trained by Zaknafein in the art of combat, having been trained on pretty much every medieval style weapon that exists. He has mastered fighting with dual scimitars in particular and also is skillful with a bow. The ranger has been through multiple wars (against barbarians, gray dwarves, drow, etc), battles, fought a dragon, and is now spending his time in canon fighting pirates. He cannot, however, use any sort of modern weapons like pistols. He can also blind fight, which isn't quite as good as blind sight, but still pretty deadly. Drizzt also attended the fighters' school in Menzonberranzan, Melee-Magthere.

Nautical Skills - Drizzt has spent 6 years sailing as part of an anti-pirate crew on the Sea Sprite off of the Sword Coast. He's skilled at knots and has learned much from the ship's Captain Deudermont. He knows the general tasks for how to make a ship run, and isn't afraid to help out when he's needed. He also can sew holes in the sails if need be.

Survivalism - Drizzt spent ten years in the incredibly dangerous Underdark by himself (with Guen) and managed to have his own safe haven and even his own herd of cow-like rothé. Then he later on spent time in the wilderness of the surface world (managing to survive his first winter if only barely) before being taken in by Mooshie to learn the skills of a ranger, learning things like tracking, hunting, finding and making food, animal identification and empathy, plant identification, field dressing (if not in Menzoberranzan), and some natural remedies. Drizzt eventually settled down in Icewind Dale for a number of years and called its tundra and mountains home, finding himself a little cave in which to live.

Basically, it's kind of his thing.

Character Name: Altaïr ibn La-Ahad
Series: Assassin's Creed
Skill Equivalencies Requested:
Reasoning:

Cold Reading: Debatable? He hunts people for a living, which includes studying them for strengths, weaknesses, usual haunts, habits, fears, motives, etc. Made to do most of the groundwork as punishment, he still took out 8 ranked Templars (plus some followers) with the help of this investigation in 3 months, while also making the week-long commute to and from Masyaf between each one. However, he was fooled by a crossdresser once (in full armor with closed helmet, but still). It may be that, due to where and when he was raised, he simply did not expect a woman there. At the canon point I took him from, he won't be making that mistake again lol.

Cultures and Humanities: 12th century European and Middle Eastern. Assassins in the field had to be well-educated to help them infiltrate various cultures.

[Disguise or Mastery of Disguise??]: Altaïr is able to blend in plain sight with groups of both European and Middle Eastern scholars. His strengths lie in choosing clothing, quickly obtaining and/or using local knowledge, posing as a scholar, lying, and avoiding detection. I don't think he knows how to do makeup or forge papers on his own.

Edged Weapons: Uses a short blade (a long knife) and throwing knives in canon.

Prevarication: If he wasn't a good lier, he'd have broken the third tenet of the Assassin's Creed (TITLEDROP) about five million times. Assassins are trained/expected not to lie even under duress/torture. For example, Ahmad Sofian killed himself because he was so ashamed he'd revealed information to the enemy.

Etiquette: 12th century Assassin, Muslim, Saracen, Syrian, Christian, Crusader states, Jewish, and general Levant. In canon he has to conduct himself without arousing suspicion, even while he is a wanted man right under a guard captain's nose. He also enters sacred sites and other restricted areas in public as a scholar, which demand their own set of social rules.

High Society Etiquette: 12th century Christian scholar/Muslim hakim circles. Blends in with them in canon.

Research: In AC1, demonstrated by practical walking the streets, e.g. eavesdropping. In AC2, demonstrated in his Codex by scholarly pursuits in various fields. The Codex was started shortly after the end of AC1, the canon point I used, most likely within the same year.

Riding: Horses only

Sleight of Hand and Pick-Pocketry: Side missions include picking pockets while moving.

Swordfighting: Middle Eastern

Three-Dimensional Stealth: With a combination of parkour and silent movement throughout. As long as he is not within line of sight, he can move or draw weapons however he wants in the presence of vigilant knights or even other Assassins, and they are none the wiser.

Wilderness Survival: Mountainous and arid climates. It would be stupid to send him riding alone for a week between cities without at least basic knowledge.

Cultures and Humanities, Disguise, Edged Weapons, Prevarication, Etiquette, High-Society Etiquette, Research, Riding, Sleight of Hand, Three-Dimensional Stealth, and Wilderness Survival added. I didn't give you cold reading, because you seem to talk about studying his marks, and these are split-second judgement (plus, no other assassin's creed characters have taken this skill). I didn't give you swordfighting because that was a specific style in Dolorosa. (Also because... literally nobody has it? Even though lots of people know swordfighting in some style or another.)

Portal Creation, Teleportation, and Stealth added. For the magic, did you discuss that with a mods too? Because by getting a skill equivalency, his magic would then work exactly as cantrips and elementalism does. Generally speaking, for canon magic, there's no need for a skill equivalency unless it does something a liminal or telepathic skill does - you just keep your magic as is.

(All this said, I'm not canon-familiar, so idk how similar his magic is to the skills mentioned, or how much any of what I said re: liminal and telepathic skills applies.)
